Saltwater Memories: Growing Up Beside the Sea

Updated: Jun 18, 2023

Growing up by the sea is a unique and magical experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Living by the coast provides a lifestyle that is entirely different from that of an inland town or city. There is an air of freedom, excitement, and tranquillity that comes with being close to the ocean. From my own personal experience, growing up on the small island of Jersey has given me memories that will stay with me for a lifetime.

One of the biggest benefits of living by the sea is the connection it provides to nature. As a child, I was fascinated by the vastness of the ocean, the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore, and the beautiful sunsets that painted the sky in shades of orange and pink. The beach became my playground, and I spent countless hours building sandcastles, collecting rocks and shells, and playing in the water.

Living by the sea also offers a unique sense of community. The beach is a meeting point for everyone, and it provides an opportunity for socialising and making new friends. The coastal lifestyle is laid-back, and everyone is approachable and friendly. As a child, I felt a sense of safety knowing that everyone knew each other and that the community would come together to help one another if needed.

Growing up by the sea also offers a range of activities. Water sports such as surfing, and swimming are a big part of the coastal lifestyle. As a child, I had the opportunity to learn how to body surf, and it quickly became one of my favourite hobbies. I also enjoyed hiking along the cliffs and exploring rock pools.

Another significant benefit of growing up by the sea is access to fresh seafood. I remember going to the local fish market with my mother and selecting the catch of the day. We would then take it home and prepare it for dinner, knowing that it was fresh and locally sourced.

Growing up by the sea is a unique and enriching experience that offers a range of benefits that cannot be found elsewhere. From the connection to nature and the sense of community to the range of activities and access to fresh seafood, living by the coast provides a lifestyle that is unique. The memories and experiences that I have gained from growing up by the sea have no doubt influenced my art and will stay with me forever. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had these opportunities and enjoy sharing them with others through my paintings.
