Being an artist is a long game. It takes courage, persistence, and trust in yourself. And while the path is often winding and uncertain, it’s also deeply rewarding. Here's some wisdom from those who’ve walked it:

  • Create art you love. Let passion guide you, not trends. When you love what you're making, others will feel that energy too.

  • Stay patient. Good work takes time. Trust your process and let your work unfold naturally.

  • Focus on integrity. Be honest with yourself about what you’re creating and why. Stay true to your vision.

  • Don’t fear experimentation. Explore styles, but try to include something recognisably you in everything you make.

  • Show up. Inspiration often follows action. Make the work, even when it’s hard.

  • Build and nurture your network. These relationships are vital to your growth, support, and sustainability.

  • Document everything. Photos, notes, progress. It’s easier to stay organised and track your development.

  • Diversify your income. Find ways to make money from your art without compromising your creative voice.

  • Get organised. A smooth business behind the scenes creates more space for creativity.

  • Learn the basics of marketing, finance, and communication. You are a business.

  • Be professional. Be reliable, responsive, and respectful. This will get you far.

  • Be ready. Opportunities often come without warning. Have your bio, images, and documents ready to go.

  • Find a mentor. Learning from someone further down the path can save you time and give you direction.

  • Don’t let fear win. Fear of failure, comparison, or imperfection will always be there. Keep going anyway.

  • Rejection and failure are normal. They’re part of the process. Learn from them and move forward.

  • You won’t be for everyone. That’s a strength, not a weakness. Focus on your people: your collectors, fans, and community.

  • Take responsibility. Excuses will slow you down. Do the work and own your path.

  • Prioritise your wellbeing. Rest, eat well, and get fresh air. A healthy mind and body support your creative life.

  • Label, organise, and streamline. Know what you’ve sold, to whom, and when. Keep everything easy to access.

  • Keep improving. Whether it's your craft, mindset, or systems, mastery is ongoing.

  • Let go of perfection. Aim for progress, not perfection. Done is better than perfect.

  • Celebrate your wins. Whether it’s finishing a piece or making a sale, acknowledge your milestones.

And most of all, don’t wait for permission. You don’t need it. This is your journey. Your calling. You are an artist because you make art. Keep making it, keep sharing it, and keep growing.
